Ellen Stone Smith Landon

1833 – 1916
Ellen Stone Smith Landon was born as Ellen J. Stone in 1833 to Clarissa and Willis in Litchfield. She probably died in 1916. Her first husband was Fayette W. Smith, whom she married in 1851 until his death in 1857; together they had one daughter, Julia Smith. In the 1860 census, Ellen was living with her mother and daughter while working at "Tr. Com School." She then married William Lucas Landon, a carpenter, around 1860 or 1861. In the 1870 federal census she was living with her husband and daughters, Ida (9) and Marion (7) while "keeping house." In the 1880 federal census, she was listed as living with her husband and 17-year-old daughter Marion E. Landon while "keeping house." In the 1900 federal census she was listed as widowed after 35 years of marriage, with 3 children born and 2 living; she was also listed as white, able to read and write, and owner of her own home.
