Lois Hotchkiss

1795 – 1884
Lois Hotchkiss was born in Waterbury to Tamar Richardson and Stephen Hotchkiss on November 28, 1795. Her father, Stephen, served 18 months in Captain Phineas Porter's camp from Waterbury during the Revolutionary War. This service later provided Tamar with a Revolutionary War Veteran's pension. He also was deacon of the First Church of Waterbury.

Lois was part of a large family, her siblings being Joseph, Clarissa, Esther, Chloe, Irene, and Phoebe Irene. Lois never married and lived with her father until he died, inheriting his household goods. The backing on her cotton-top quilt tells us that the cloth, initialed "TR" for Tamar, was spun and hand-woven by her mother.

After Stephen died, Lois and her mother ran the cider farm for several years. Lois later lived on the farm with a relative named Gilbert Benjamin Hotchkiss along with his wife, Emma Chatfield, as well as Lois' mentally disabled sister Clarissa. Lois died September 21, 1884 at the age of 89. She out lived all of her brothers and sisters by 18 years.
