Etching - Herring Fleet by Gilbert Munger

1879 (Date manufactured/created)
‘Herring Fleet’ etching on paper, pristine and framed, by Gilbert Munger (1837-1903).  The frame size is 16.5" x 19" x 1.25" deep and has archival matting and museum glass.  This item was in the 1993 Tweed Museum exhibition.
Michael D. Schroeder, who, along with his wife Leslie donated this artwork, is the author of the https://gilbertmunger.org website and two books presenting the works and period documentation of the American landscape painter Gilbert Munger.  He wrote ... "Not possible to be certain, but I think it is the herring fleet at Stornoway Scotland. Reasons are: 1) Munger painted there in 1878; 2) vintage photos of the fleet look very similar; 3) Munger painting with the same title was exhibited on Newcastle-on-Tyne in 1879; 4) the etching shows a sunrise, which needs an east coast of Britain location."
The artwork, signed and dated by Gilbert Munger, was professionally conserved in 2001 by Alvarez Fine Art Services in New York City.
