A trammel is an adjustable pothook for lug poles or fireplace cranes. It has two parts — the hook can be slid up or down and secured into any of the holes. This adjusts the height of the pot over the fire. The lower the pot, the higher the temperature. This trammel belonged to Deacon Abraham Dudley (1779-1852) and Molly Bassett Dudley (1781-1863) who lived in the Clapboard Hill section of Guilford.
