This kind of table is called a tavern table, a modern name for an early colonial, lightweight table with a wide top that extends far beyond its legs. The table could be moved around easily to accommodate patrons in a bustling tavern or inn. Like this example, they also typically have a breadboard-edge tabletop, turned legs connected with stretchers at the base, and a small drawer. This table was made in the Boston area.
