Tulip, possibly yellow poplar

Bible box or desk box; front decorated with red and yellow paint; initials "AC" painted on front; "AC / 1586" possibly scratched in lid; punched circle decoration or compass marks in tulip lid may have been made at a later date; interior features a till without a lid on right side; lock is original but the brass Queen Anne escutcheon is early 18th century; paint decoration is scribed - background was painted and original wood was the design (or might have been painted black)
