On the afternoon of September 21, 1938, Madison teenager Allan Miller and three of his friends braved the torrential downpour and 115 mph winds to check out the conditions on the beach off Seaview Avenue. The group was surprised to see a man emerging from the waves wearing two lifejackets, and ran to help. Captain William Swift was one of 18 survivors of a menhaden fishing boat which had floundered in the Long Island Sound. 7 other members of the crew perished. See flic.kr/p/zDqoGA for more about the hurricane's consequences to Madison.
