Attached silver plate reads " This desk belonged to Capt. Freeborn Groves of Beverly, Mass. who died about 1775 and has been in the Groves family 50 years or more previously. It is now given by the granddaughter, Mrs. H. Groves Whippler to her nephew, Chas. A. Cummings, to be kept exclusively as an heirloom in the family. Boston, Sept. 10, 1859 " .
