Costume, Dress - Purple Taffeta and Velvet Dress | McEvoy, New York | American

1915 – 1919 (Date manufactured/created)
Taffeta, Velvet & Net, Lace & Silk
This dress is fragile, please handle it accordingly.
This dress is of purple silk, dark purple velvet and crêpe georgette. The bodice is lined with cream silk and decorated with white net, lace and chiffon. The purple silk has shattered.
The bodice of this dress has a fitted lining, exempting the sleeves. It is lightly boned at the waist. A waist tape reads, "McEvoy, 41 ½ West 54th St. N.Y."  It closes over a front insertion panel at center front with hooks and eyes and frog closures. The neckline is embellished with a collar of embroidered net. The long sleeves end in a deep, decoratively buttoned pointed cuff,  turning back to reveal velvet and a crêpe frill.
Then skirt is fully lined. The lining hangs free at the hem. It anchors to the skirt at a petersham waistband closing over a placket with hooks and eyes. The skirt is embellished with a wide velvet sash and panel, winding to then back of the skirt; it ends in a point. A silk imitation sash trails off the center back.

Belonged to Margarie Lee Chittenden (1884-1981). OL 56".
