Rifle - Hawkin percussion half stock short rifle

1865 (Date manufactured/created)
Iron Brass and Cherry (?)
Hawkin half stock short rifle with octagonal barrel with percussion lock . Percussion lock and octagonal barrel.  Custom made short stock with set and hair triggers.  Brass fittings including butt, scrolled trigger guard, 8 pointed star inlay and a circular patch box.  Engraved lock plate. 1865.  Sometimes young men went to war with their own weapon such as this one, originally made for hunting. Marked 1865, this was not converted from flint to percussion; it came from the factory already set up for percussion caps. By 1865 no firearms manufacturer was producing flintlocks, even then percussion was starting to be an obsolete ignition system - black powder metallic cartridge firearms were becoming more prevalent.
