Straw, Silk
This bonnet is very fragile. Please limit handling of the object.
A wedding bonnet, worn between 1850 and 1855. This is determined by the profile of the hat. The bonnet has a small, tight fitting crown at the back of the head, cheek-tabs that scroll dramatically from the nape of the neck to the cheek, and a short brim angled slightly upward.
The bonnet is made from open weave straw and nearly transparent, strand-like material. The weave of the straw varies in bands from a varied wave, a larger scallop, and a thick wavy line, and another varied wave. This variation is framed by a very small scalloped line. The bonnet shows impeccable craftsmanship.
The bonnet is lined with a transparent white silk (mostly lost), decorated with a cloth floral wreath, and the face is framed by cloth flowers with fabric stems. White ribbon streamers would have tied under the chin, but little remains of this ornament.
Condition: Poor to Fair. Silk lining has suffered heavy losses. Bonnet misshapen. (approx) 71/2" crown to rim.
