Household, Furniture - Slant Lid Bible Box

1680s (Date manufactured/created)
Wood, Oak, Iron Fittings
Dark brown walnut, late 17th c. slant top Bible box with deeply carved front.  Full width pit-sawn walnut sides, back & bottom.  Nailed together with square head hand hewn nails.  The Slant lid is hinged with 2 hand hewn butterfly hinges with 6 nails each.  'Ghost marks' indicate the slanted top once had a lip on bottom edge to support a Bible/book when being used.  Carved front panel with a large lock plate in center, likely crudely replaced in the 18th c.  Chip carved edges on all sides; shelf inside has spaces for 2 drawers and an open space for miscellaneous storage.  Drawers are original, nailed together with period nails.  Drawer pulls are simple brass rings passed through 2 holes in each drawer front.  Small moldings inside, applied much later, may have supported an inside cover.  H 9 7/8"; W 20 1/4"; D 15 1/4"
