Pepperidge Trees on point of land half way between Chadwick barn and house facing the marshes; Joe Creek in the meadow. An Impressionist painter, Chadwick was born in England but came to Old Lyme, CT at the age of 23. With the influence of his Old Lyme colleagues, he turned from portraits to the landscape, especially depicting the seasonal changes in the Lyme countryside. In 1902 he made his first visit to Old Lyme where he became affiliated with the Impressionist art colony center ed at Florence Griswold's home. For the rest of his artist's career, he retuend to the picturesque town, eventually purchasing a home there in 1915. At Old Lyme, he absorbed the tenents of Impressionism and his landscapes exhibit that style's high-keyed palettte and broken brushstroke, although his Impressionism is marked for its subtler handling. At the same time he continued to paint figurative works in the conservative style of his teacher, DeCamp.
