Maker: John Doud. Early Colonial Flintlock Musket. approx. .80 caliber.. Round, smooth bore barrel of 39 inch length. Oblong sight at muzzle. Overall 54 inches lentgh firearm. Plain American flintlock wth gooseneck cock/hammer, unmarked. Barrel pinned to curley maple stock within 5 inches of muzzle. Brass trigger guard, buttplate, and ramrod pipes. Iron ramrod. Buttplate extends over top of hte butt and is marked "John Doud fecit Goshen, CT". Made by John Doud of Goshen, CT. Doud was an apprentice of Benoni Hills along with Benoni's son Medad. They carried on the business from an early age making guns from about 1750 until after the Revolution. Had a Committee of Safety contract in 1776.
