'Whig Rose' Appliqued quilt. Made by the donor's grandmother, Rachel Hill. This quilt, in a variation of the 'whig rose' pattern, features a white ground with red hand-appliqued flowers with green leaves and a red and green border. Appliqué is a technique by which a fabric is stitched onto a foundation fabric in order to make a pattern. The 'whig rose' pattern was an applique type first seen in the 1830s. Named during Andrew Jackson's administration, the pattern, originally called 'democratic rose', reflected its association with two early American political parties: the Whigs and the Democrats. Appliqued red and green quilts in the 'whig rose' pattern remained popular throughout the second half of the 19th century.
