The woman in this image has been a recurring image throughout Colleen Coleman's work for the past twenty years; Coleman calls her "Topsy" and has a rich backstory to accompany the character that weaves throughout these works. The original image was drawn from a copy of National Geographic.
In this work, Coleman intended to comment on the ways in which Black women are perceived by society, particularly the beauty standards that women must manage. She wished to depict Topsy as a goddess, with jewels to accentuate her elaborate hairstyle and solemn face.
