Physical accession records reviewed T-numbers had been assigned to this set of photographs in 2014 since the acquisition information was unknown to staff and the items had no accession numbers. In February 2017, a newspaper article from January 1971 was found that provided detailed information about the Museum's purchase of the items from a dealer in England. The photographs were there because Nancy Fish Barnum, who was born and raised in England, had sent the photographs to a friend there, possibly some time after P. T. Barnum died and she remarried and left the U. S. to live in Europe.
