Daguerreotype photograph of Charles S. Stratton, known as General Tom Thumb, and his father, Sherwood Edward Stratton, both seated. It likely dates to 1843. Young Charles, who would be age five, sits in a miniature chair, and looks straight into the camera; his hands rest on the arms of the chair, and his legs project straight forward, making the soles of his shoes visible. Charles wears a light color outfit with a darker jacket over it. His father is shown on the right looking slightly off camera towards the left. He is dressed in a short, cut away jacket and patterned silk vest, worn over a formal white shirt. The vest has a deep V front. A striped silk "stock" is worn under the collar, with the knot visible at the center. His trousers are a light color. Sherwood has a slightly receding hairline, with a side part in his hair. His dark, straight hair is worn long, covering over his ears.
Gold color matting, called a preserver, surrounds the daguerreotype. The case is brown on the exterior with no ornamentation and has a green silk lining inside in the left panel that covers the picture when the case is closed. Case is secured by two metal hooks and eyes.
Label indicates that this is from 1843. The creator of the daugerreotype is not named.
