Minnie Rogers Steele took drawing lessons as a child at St. Margaret's School in Waterbury, CT and later became influential as an art teacher in Waterbury. In 1881 she began her art studies in New York City at the Art Students League under Charles Melville Dewey. She also studied in Philadelphia at the Academy of Fine Arts and in Provincetown during the summer. Her instructors included Dewey, William Merritt Chase, and Frank Dumond. In winter 1928-29, she studied in Paris under the French modern painter, Andre Lohte. After returning from abroad, Steele established her art studio on Maple Street, where she also offered lessons.
The Minnie Rogers Steele Papers is a small collection that spans from 1873-2019, but the bulk of the material dates from 1924-1929. Minnie Rogers Steele was an artist who was born in Waterbury, CT. Between 1928 and 1929 she studied art in Paris under Andre Lhote who was known as the "academician cubist." Her trip to Paris was funded by a Miss Chase – possibly Elsie Rowland Chase. The collection contains 21 letters from Minnie during her stay in Paris, largely to Minnie's son Norman. Folder 4 has a small engraving depicting Montmarte that was sent along to Norman close to Christmas. In addition, the collection also contains a file of collected biographical notes and a copy of a photograph of Steele, a signed geography textbook, and correspondence from Steele to the former Director of the Mattatuck Museum Rawson Haddon.
