William Clarke Photographs

Collection, Ms B87

1989
Fairfield Museum
William Clarke was born in New York City. He graduated from the Taft School and Yale University. He was the former plant manager of Handy & Harman and was active in a wide variety of civic and cultural affairs. After his retirement in 1976, he pursued his interests in photography and poetry. He won several awards for his photography and displayed his work in solo exhibitions at the Fairfield Public Library, First Church Congregational, and local banks.
Mr. Clarke initially left his photograph collection at the historical society in January 1996 with the promise to complete the identification of the images. An opportunity unfortunately never presented itself. As a result, the photographs retain their original organization--by film roll number and by subject--with minimal individual identification. The images were removed from the 3-ring binders in which they were donated, put into sleeves, then into archival folders. Those identified only by roll number are arranged in numerical order, while those in subject order are alphabetically arranged.
