Ruth Mills Bradley was the first woman from Fairfield, and the first from Connecticut, to join the WACs after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, in 1942. She stayed in the the Army as a career officer. She was promoted to Major in 1956 and had reached the rank of Lieutenant Colonel when she retired in 1969.
The collection consists of materials gathered by her relatives to commemorate her life of service. The information includes a family history; biographies of Ruth Bradley; copies of her military records; news articles about her enlistment and career; an essay on WACs at Camp Ritchie, Maryland; assorted documents; two color photographic portraits; and two certificates she received on her retirement from the service. A framed set of medals awarded to Bradley are in the museum collection, accession number 1997.8.1-21.
