John Warner Barber was an engraver and historian in New Haven. Born February 2, 1798 in East Windsor, Conn.; apprenticed to Abner Reed, engraver; operated his own engraving business in New Haven; studied history and traveled the eastern U.S., gathering information for the books which he wrote and then illustrated with his engravings; died in New Haven on June 22, 1885. His book, Connecticut Historical Collections (1836), one of the first popular local histories in the US, depicted scenes from each of Connecticut's towns.
This volume is labeled Book Number 3 and it contains Barber's Views in Connecticut, on the day which each drawing was taken. The complete list of events in Connecticut goes up to 1880 and Beckwith Almanac 1881. There are also various incomplete extracts from newspapers. This book is reversed and the inscription inside cover reads John W Barber, Oct. 1880, 196 George Street New Haven. This is a scrapbook containing newspaper clippings, notes pasted in and written, and contents on the first page of each end, dating mostly from 1880.
