Fairfield Citizen News Editorial Cartoons

Collection, MS B59

1979 – 1983
Fairfield Museum
This collection came as part of the Fairfield Citizen-News photograph archive sometime in the late 1980s, and was discovered during processing in July 1995. The original artwork was drawn by at least four artists, one of whose names is unclear. The other three artists are Tom Glover, Jean M Griffin, and Jon T. Kline. All worked on contract to the newspapers; they were not regular employees.

The Fairfield Citizen-News was first published in July 16, 1970. Publisher Peter Ball purchased the name of the old "Southport Chronicle" and added it to the name of his new publication, "The Fairfield Citizen and Chronicle." The name was shortened to "Fairfield Citizen" a few months after the inaugural issue. In 1973 the paper was purchased by B.V. Brooks; as of 1995 it is still published by Brooks Publishing, based in Westport, Conn.

Tom Glover, a caricaturist living in Rowayton, Conn., drew cartoons for Brooks Publishing on a contract basis from 1979 to 1983. In addition to his editorial work, he has drawn caricatures of the customers of Nabisco, Chrysler, Harley Davidson, Golf Digest, and during the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid, New York, for Sports Illustrated. Glover was in advertising before he began drawing cartoons.

Information on the other two cartoonists is not available.
The collection consists of original cartoon drawings in ink on various types of paper, created by artists Tom Glover of Rowayton, Conn., Jean M Griffin, and Jon T Klein. The cartoons, the majority of which were drawn by Glover, illustrated editorials published in the Fairfield Citizen-news between 1979-1983. The drawings are arranged chronologically by the date on which they were published, and each is accompanied by a photocopy of the editorial it illustrated. Several drawings have pasted-on corrections which are starting to fall off as the adhesive dries out.
