The Elton family have been members of the Waterbury community since the mid-1700s and were farmers, businessmen, politicians, and medical doctors. A brief history of those included in these papers is as follows.
John Elton (circa 1855-1800) was a Watertown doctor.
Samuel Elton (1780 –1858) was the son of John ,and also a prominent Watertown doctor for 50 years.
Elizabeth "Betsey" (Merriman) Elton (1776-1877) was the wife of Samuel, and was a benefactor of St. John's Episcopal Church.
John P. Elton (1809-1864) was the son of Samuel and Betsy. He was a partner in Brown and Elton, Waterbury Brass Company, and Waterbury Bank. Elected to General Assembly 1840, 1849, 1850, 1863 and Presidential elector 1864. Moved to Waterbury in 1832.
Olive Elton (1816-1892) was the wife of John P., benefactor of St. John's Church.
James S. Elton (1838-1923)was the son of John P, and Olive. He was President of Elton Banking Co., Waterbury Brass Co., Waterbury Automatic Signal Telegraph Co. He served in the State Senate from 1882-83.
John P. Elton II (1866-1948) was the son of James S Elton. He was the President of Elton Banking Co., Waterbury Brass Co. He was a Trinity College Graduate, served as Mayor 1902.

The Elton Family Papers spans 1775 through 1935 and documents the family life of the Elton Family both professionally and personally. The collection is arranged into 2 series.
This Family Papers series is largely composed of correspondence, to and from members of the Elton family. The series also includes professional documents including deeds, promissory notes, wills, and Elton Banking Co. papers. There is a small amount of genealogical material and material from miscellaneous family members, including school papers and letters from British relations. There is also an anti-strike leaflet regarding the 1902 Waterbury Clock Company strike. The series is arranged chronologically by family member.
The Rare Medical Texts is a collection of 46 medical books owned by various members of the Elton family including 2 hand written manuscript volumes. The volumes range from 1727 to 1853 and several were passed from James Elton(1700s) to John P. Elton. The Rare Medical texts are largely housed separately from the archival collection and are arranged by LC call number.
