George Townsend lived in Waterbury, CT during the mid-1800s. He was born in Connecticut around 1828 and died in 1868, according to obituaries and ancestry records. He wrote about daily life in his diaries.
The George L. Townsend Collection is composed mainly of diaries that document life in Middlebury and Waterbury from 1865-1867. Typical entries include weather, family outings, social outings, masonic lodge meetings, and notes for newspaper articles.

The collection is arranged naturally into two series. Diaries and Scrapbooks (1845-1867) were created by George L. Townsend. Collected Material (1868) was collected after his death.
