World War I

Collection, MS B24

1914 – 1920
Fairfield Museum
This subject collection was created from materials given by various donors. A large portion concerns the “home front” activities of Mrs. William B. Glover (Helen Wardwell) of 363 Old Post Road, in Fairfield, including the Red Cross knitting program, and home gardening and home canning at the Fairfield Canning Kitchen, run through the Extension Office of the State Department of Agriculture. Other individuals whose papers are included are Frank L. Morgan of Southport; William (Billy) and Theodore (Teddy) Burr of Fairfield, the latter of whom served in France during the war; and H. W. Goldsborough who was active in Fairfield’s Connecticut Home Guard, Co. M, 4th regiment.
The collection is organized into seven series by individual or by type of material. Series A documents the activities of Helen Wardwell Glover with printed material she distributed on the topics of home gardens, food conservation, and home canning. Also included in her materials are some records of the Fairfield War Bureau, of which she was a member. Records of the Connecticut Home Guard are arranged in Series B and consist of rosters, drill records and military manuals, as well as a map of the 4th military district. Frank L. Morgan’s photograph album and discharge paper are in Series C. Series D encompasses the correspondence, furlough and discharge papers, and soldier’s handbook of William T. Burr. His brother Theodore B. Burr, who served in France, is represented by correspondence, orders, circulars, service record, maps, and welcome home letters, arranged in Series E. A New Testament and military diary kept by Fred Conwell is in Series F. Series G consists of assorted printed materials, including military manuals, YMCA-published booklets, song books, maps and atlases, and a variety of circulars and pamphlets. Individual items are organized in Series H and include a scrapbook kept by Helen Britten Beardsley, a discharge paper for John Banks; a protection order for George Stadler; postcards; photographs; a flag and poem written by Fairfield tax collector David S. Huntington while in the trenches and newspaper clippings.
