Between 1995 and 2001 the Mattatuck Museum conducted 60 oral history interviews with African American citizens in Waterbury. The project targeted elderly African Americans in order to obtain information about the early to mid twentieth century life in Waterbury. In addition to oral history interviews, the project also collected photographs and newspaper clippings from the participants. The museum also collected general sources about the African American community in Waterbury.
This collection is composed of cassette tapes, digital audio files, transcripts, photographs, newspaper clippings, and other documents. Collected by the Mattatuck Museum in the late 1990s, this collection tells stories from the African American community in Waterbury, CT. Topics include: migrating to Waterbury, working in the brass factories, everyday life, attending church, neighborhood life, and family life.
