The Bridgeport Protestant Orphan Asylum was founded in 1867. It purchased a Lafayette Street building in Bridgeport, CT and remained there until 1900. From 1900 to 1935, the orphanage was located in Black Rock on Ellsworth Street. In 1935, the name was changed to Woodfield Village and moved to Stratfield Road in Fairfield. In the meantime, the Family Welfare Society of Fairfield was organized in 1922. In 1944 the name was changed to the Family Service Society of Fairfield, Inc. After they merged with the Bridgeport Family Service around 1967 they became the Family Service Society of Eastern Fairfield County. When that organization merged with Woodfield Village in 1972, the name was changed to Family Services - Woodfield, Inc., 800 Clinton Avenue, Bridgeport, CT. For more background, see Box 4, Folder C.
This collection in in 4 1/2 boxes with 3 oversize items containing scrapbooks. Boxes 1 and 2 hold ledgers and Box 3 annual reports, legal papers and correspondence. Box 4 holds miscellaneous material. Box 5 holds annual meeting reports concerning the Family Service Society of Fairfield, Inc. Box 6 contains the cornerstone box of the Bridgeport Orphan Asylum. Box 7 contains material related to the laying of the cornerstone in 1899 and legal/financial papers, 1915-1934.
