Humphrey Hyde settled in Fairfield around 1649/50. His son, John, grandson John, and other heirs' papers are in this collection. The bulk of the material is from the early 1700s. More information on the family can be found in the included genealogical material and in "The History of Fairfield, Vol. I," by Elizabeth Hubbell Schenck, New York, 1889, and History and Genealogy of the Families of Old Fairfield, Vol. I, Part I, by Donald Lines Jacobus, Fairfield, CT, 1930.
This collection documents the development and implementation of public transit and other forms of transportation in Waterbury spanning 1845 through circa 1920. It is arranged into two series, Railroad; and Trolleys, Buses, and Other Transportation. The Railroad series contains records relating to the development, implementation, and ridership of the Naugatuck Rail Road. The Trolley, Bus and Other Series contains documents regarding local bus and trolley routes, as well as automobiles. Both series contain documents related to the employees of the transportation companies, as well as the riders.

The collection is largely paper based, but also includes physical tokens used for bus lines. Documents include: tickets, schedules, advertisements, magazines/journals, commemorative documents, histories of the railroad, a student thesis, broadsides, and administrative documents.

Of special interest are the 3 Connecticut Rail and Light employee ledgers. These oversized bound books contain an index of last names in the front, followed by a photograph from the front and in profile of new employees. Underneath the photograph is more information about the driver including name, conductor number, date appointed, date resigned. There is often an additional comment on why the person was let go or is no longer in employ. ;Folders A through I contain deeds, estate and probate papers, financial and legal papers and maps. There are several documents of slave purchases in folder I. The deeds are in chronological order, and all other papers are alphabetized; Folders J through O contain genealogical information and photos. These are filed in alphabetical order. Folder P contains an account book of John Hide, Sr. and John Hide Jr., including estate distributions.
Arranged into two series, each series is arranged chronologically.
