Julius Dessoir

1801 – 1884
Julius Dessoir was French, and came to America in the 1840s with the first listing of his work as a cabinet maker being found in at 1842-1843 New York City phone book. His furniture making business was based on Broadway, and he became well known for elaborate furniture work. He exhibited his work in the New York Crystal Palace of 1853. His work for Barnum was done within Dessoir’s first decade in America, and shows not only Barnum’s elaborate taste, but Dessoir’s skill level as a craftsman.
