Harvey Weiss

1922 – 2007
Harvey Weiss, nationally known sculptor, illustrator and author studied at New York University, the Arts Students League, The National Academy of Design, and with the sculptor Ossipe Zadkine in Paris. He is a 1996 fellow of the National Sculpture Society.
Many influences - Weiss's early years in advertising, the authoring and illustration of over 40 children's books, and his twenty year affiliation as a professor at Adelphi University have shaped his work.
Although Weiss's early sculpture is abstract and uses a variety of materials ranging from brass to cast iron and bronze - his sculpture material of choice during the past 30 years has been terra cotta - often combined with other materials such as lead, wood, and linen, and including historical references set in type describing fantastical surroundings.
A Westport resident for 40 years, his sculpture is part of many public and private collections including the Joseph Hirshorn Collection, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, GE Corporation, and The National Academy of Design. His commissions include the Temple B'nai Zion, Shreveport, LA, the Danbury Courthouse, and the Connecticut Office building, in Saugatuck, CT.
