Century Brass Products Inc

The Scovill brass factory in Waterbury was sold to a group of investors in 1976, who then launched the Century Brass Products, Inc. company. In 1977, Century Brass secured government contracts for the production of 460 million pennies and 220 million nickels. Century was paid $1.9 million for making the coins, which were then imprinted by the US Treasury Department at West Point with a total face value of $15.6 million. Every penny and nickel dated 1977 was made at Century’s factory on West Main Street in Waterbury. The contract was for that one year only. After trying a variety of product lines, Century Brass declared bankruptcy in 1985.
