Seymour Smith & Son

Seymour Smith established his tool-making business in Oakville in 1866, manufacturing hardware including spoke shaves, saws, shears and pliers. He had previously operated in Sharon, Connecticut and Worcester, Massachusetts. In Oakville, Smith occupied the former Wheeler & Wilson Sewing Machine building. His son William became a partner in 1884, when the business name was changed to Seymour Smith & Son. The company was purchased by Gilmour Group, a subsidiary of Vermont American, in 1985 and manufacturing was eventually relocated to Somerset, Pennsylvania.
