Major John B. Morehouse

1826 – 1894
John B. Morehouse was born in 1826, son of William Morehouse (b. 1785) and Esther Burr (b. 1786). Married Julia F. Sturges (1834-1900). He went to the Academy, and his father was a farmer. He went to New York to get a berth on a ship in 1844, and was a sailor for 3 years, then went to California during the Gold Rush and mined. He was a major in the Civil War; he enlisted on October 16, 1861; he was captured June 8, 1862 in Cross Keys, VA; paroled September 1863 (1862?); promoted to 2nd Lt., Company B, March 25, 1863 (not mustered); captured June 20, 1863, Frederick, MD; released Aug., 1863; promoted to 1st Lt., Company B, October 12, 1863 (not mustered); Capt., Co. H, Dec. 21, 1863; wounded June 1 and 29, 1864; promoted to Major, Feb.16, 1865. In his older age he ran a ranch out in Colorado. He died blind in 1894.
