Cpt. David Burr

1826 – 1866
Captain David Burr, of Fairfield, son of Ebenezer Burr (1798-1873) and Hannah Osborn (1803--) married Magdalen (Ellen) Grostephan of Marseilles, France. His children include James B., Josephine, and David. Burr was a seaman who sailed from America to Europe; He made several trips to Marseilles and Palermo, Havanna, and other ports. He served under Captain Isaac Jennings of Fairfield, his first cousin, and eventually became a captain of the Bark “Apollo,” captain of Bark “Henry Shelton” and captain of the Ship “Geo. A. Phelps.” He conducted business in the ports of Licita, London, Marseilles, New York, Palermo, and Philadelphia. He was lost at sea serving as the first mate of the sidewheel steamer Evening Star, off Cape Hatteras, October 1865 or 1866, which foundered in storm (a cyclone) 180 miles east of Tyber Island, GA en route from N.Y.to New Orleans.
