Black Silk/Lace Evening Dress

From Madison Historical Society

Curatorial Description
Sleeveless back evening dress with black silk solid layer and a delicate black lace overlay. The dress (c.1920) has a heart-shaped bust cut of the black silk which meets white silk. The White silk is cut in a traditional scoop-neck fashion (very modest) and continues all the way up the shoulder beneath the black lace. The black lace is a delicate design with small flowers embroidered across the whole body. The lace is sewn in layers below the waist providing a frilly look to the skirt and it ends in a straight cut bottom.
The lace and white silk are moderately deteriorated and very delicate. The black silk seems to have held up well.
Dress and accompanying shawl are from Michele L. McFaull and used to contain a parasol, but it was too far deteriorated and was not sent. The dress used to be Michels McFaull's.
