Silhouette of Aaron Burr

From Fairfield Museum

Curatorial Description
Hollow-cut silhouette of two men on horseback, the primary figure said to be Aaron Burr. Rectangular-shaped scene with two horsemen cut away from the paper put against black silk; hence the horsemen, shown as voids, appear black in contrast to the white paper; the large figure takes up most of the picture; it is in the center, placed in the foreground of the landscape; the horse and man are in profile, facing left; the horse’s head is lifted, all four legs are in profile and the stirrups and reins are seen; the man is wearing a top hat and coat; in the right background is a man and horse, also in profile, dashing toward the left; the paper has, lightly sketched in with ink (?), slight hills in the background, grass tufts, the horses’ shadows and some shrubbery; wood veneered rectangular frame.
