The William Chamberlain was built in 1854 during the era of clipper ships, when fierce competition in overseas commerce made speed imperative.  Described as an “Extreme Clipper,” the ship was 165 feet long and 35 feet wide.  Construction of the ship in Philadelphia was overseen by Captain Isaac Jennings of Fairfield.  He commanded the William Chamberlain on its maiden voyage to Calcutta, India, leaving New York in late November and returning the following September.  While at sea, Jennings painted this ship portrait.
Captain Isaac Jennings of Fairfield painted this image of the ship he commanded, the William Chamberlain, on a piece of fabric he was bringing home for his wife, in 1855.
