Pattern for a sampler by Elizabeth Starr; framed; ink on paper; top border - alternating tree shapes; side borders - running key; bottom border - diamond; text - alphabet in upper case, numbers 1-11, alphabet in lower case, then:

"The Ways of virtue are
pleasant and lead to peace.
Elizabeth Starr's sampler
Guilford March 3 1801
Learn to contemn [sic] all praise
Betimes for flattery is the nur [sic]
of crimes"

Old label on the back - "_ C Griffing / 1718 Garden"; inscription in ink on the back:

"Elizabeth Starr, one of seven Starr sisters
dau. of John and Mary Parmelee Starr
b. Guilford 21 May 1788
d. 14 Jan 1861
m. Jedediah Parker 8 May 1836
