This red wool cloak with a tan velvet collar was made in the mid-1700s. It belonged to Rachel Lee Griffing (1727-1811), whose husband Jasper Griffing (1722-1800) purchased the Whitfield House in 1776. It is not known if they actually lived in the house or if it was simply an investment property. The house descended through the family for four generations. Sarah Brown Chittenden Cone (1835-1909) sold the house to the State of Connecticut in 1900, then donated her great-grandmother's cloak (along with many other items) to the museum.
Donated by Mrs. Sarah Brown Chittenden Cone in 1902
