Sword Cane

Steel, Pewter

Canes were fashion accessories for early 19th-century gentlemen. This one, owned by Capt. Frederick Lee (1766-1831) of Madison, Connecticut, was also a handy, concealed weapon. It is a sword cane -- the pewter knob at the top is actually the hilt of a sword that slides into the hollow, imitation bamboo "cane" or scabbard.
