Bellows were used to pump air under a fire to increase the fire's intensity. These bellows belonged to Guilford-native and world-renowned poet and essayist Fitz-Greene Halleck (1790-1867). He was so famous that these bellows were exhibited at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893, and there is a statue of him in New York City's Central Park.
