Child's Armchair

circa 1750 – 1800 (Date manufactured/created)
Maple, Tulipwood
Because children were treated like little adults during the colonial period, their furniture (even clothing and daily chores) often mimicked their adult counterparts. This armchair was made in the Connecticut shore or Long Island area and belonged to Horace Norton (1794-1886) of Guilford. Hard wear on the top corners of the top rail and at the tips of the arms may indicate the chair was turned upside down and used as a child's walker or a support for learning to ice skate.
Received from Mrs. Lucy Ann Norton Hunt of Guilford in 1902
