Chest

circa 1695 (Date manufactured/created)
Tulip, oak, pine, paint
Closets were rare in colonial homes, so chests were used to store clothing, blankets, sheets, and other textiles (items made from cloth). This 6-board pine chest features geometric inlay designs and the pegged initials “CSE” on the front which stand for Comfort Starr (1669-1743) and his wife Elizabeth Hopson Starr (1674-1752), the donor’s great, great, great-grandparents. Comfort was a tailor, and you can see his tailor’s goose (an iron) on display in the Garret.
