Sander

Wood
Sanders were filled with fine sand and used like salt shakers to sprinkle the sand onto freshly-written letters, ledger entries, or other documents. The sand absorbed any excess wet ink to prevent smudging. This sander belonged to Henry Ward Chittenden (1794-1867), husband of Whitfield House owner Mary Griffing Chittenden (1801-1878) and the donor’s uncle and adoptive father.
