Lamp, Betty

18th century (Date manufactured/created)
Iron
Betty lamps are one of the oldest types of oil lamps. During the colonial period, they were filled with fish oil. A wick was placed in the spout to soak in the oil. These affordable lamps unfortunately produced a weak flame, much smoke, and a disagreeable smell. This lamp features a decoratively-twisted iron hanger.
