Spatula or Peel

18th century (Date manufactured/created)
Wrought iron
Hearth-cooking utensils, like this spatula made in New England, were generally made of iron. It was just one of many items a local blacksmith would supply. Blacksmiths were so important to the early colonies that, when Guilford needed one in 1670, the town took a section of land from the Green to offer as a home lot. When that blacksmith left town, the town took another section of the Green for another blacksmith in 1676. That is why the streets at the northeast and southwest corners of the Green do not line up into 4-way intersections.
