This armchair features many finely-turned spindles typical of the Carver or Bunyan style. The style was named for Governor John Carver of Plymouth Colony and John Bunyan (author of Pilgrim’s Progress) because they had chairs like this one. When the museum purchased this chair, it had been converted into a rocking chair and had several coats of paint. The rockers were removed and the paint was scraped off to restore the original appearance. It was made in Connecticut or Massachusetts.
