Henry Whitfield Statue

2003 (Date manufactured/created)
Bronze
Rev. Henry Whitfield was the minister and one of the founders of Guilford in 1639 and is the namesake of the museum. Located in front of the museum's Visitor Center, Henry greets all of the visitors to the museum. Since no image of Henry Whitfield is known to exist, this conjectural likeness was extensively researched to find the most likely clothing, hairstyle, and facial hair for a man of his age and status at the time. The bible he is holding is based on a period example.
Whitfield descendant and genealogist John Brooks Threlfall commissioned the statue from sculptor Robert Shure of Woburn, Massachusetts. It was cast by Museum Productions in Anza, California. When it arrived at the museum in 2003, it was mounted on a Stony Creek pink granite base prepared by local sculptor Darrell Petit.
