The initials ‘GR’ stand for ‘George Rex,’ England’s King George I (1660-1727). Known as the Westerwald style, these types of pitchers were made in Germany and England and were also exported to the English colonies in North America. This pitcher belonged to the Leete family. According to family legend, it was presented to Governor William Leete (1612-1683) by King Charles II (1630-1685). Unfortunately, the pitcher’s style, markings, and date refute that story.
